POLY TEACHERS, STUDENTS AND NEARBY RESIDENTS
CLAIM SHELDON/ARLETA LANDFILL CAUSES CANCER
38 INSTANCES OF CANCER AMONG POLY FACULTY,
LAWSUIT FILED BY FAMILY OF SCHOOL DEAN JERRY CORD
Many John H. Francis Polytechnic High School teachers and adminstrators feel that the Sheldon /Arleta Landfill has a causal connection to cancer. See former Coach Jerry Cord's testimony at a Senate Hearing in a Los Angeles Times Article.
There were 38 documented instances of cancer among Poly teaching staff according to former long time Poly Counselor Sylvia Brown who also testified at the Senate Hearing.
Also 20 nearby neighbors who live within two blocks of the landfill have also been diagnosed with cancer.

Many teaching staff and students believe his cancer was caused by the toxic chemicals from the Sheldon/Arleta Landfill. Los Angeles Attorney Roger L. Gordon from the Law Firm of Gordon, Edelstein, Krepack, Grant, Felton, & Goldstein filed the lawsuit on behalf of Jerry's wife Karen and his son Joshua. Case is mentioned here.(Case is Karen Cord vs. City of Los Angeles.)
Unfortunately, the trial court judge threw out the suit on a summary judgment in favor of the City of Los Angeles saying there was insufficient proof that the Sheldon/Arleta Landfill contributed to Coach Jerry Cord getting cancer despite the fact that students, faculty, and neighbors who were exposed to the Landfill had a unusually higher numer of persons having cancer than the general population that did not live next to landfills.
The Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court decision.
