John H. Francis Polytechnic High School Principal Lupe Sonnie retired after many years as a school administrator. Assistant Principal Marguerite La Motte, served for many years as an elected member of the Los Angeles Unified School District School Board. See her video.

Senior Class President Derrick Isa received his Bachelor's degree in exercise science from USC, A Master of Physical Therapy degree from Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles & Chapman University in 1989, and his Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professionals in 2005. He runs a successful business Telesis Physical Therapy.

Senior Class Vice-President Steve Shiba graduated from UCLA with a Bachelors degree in Biology, and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from UCLA in 1993.  He finished his training with a residency in Hospital Dentistry at the Long Beach VAMC. He is a successful dentist in Encino.

Linda McLeod (Massaro) has been married for 25 years to a architect, Jon Massaro. They have four children, two girls, 24 and 21 years and a set of identical twin boys that are 19 years old. Linda owns a successful grooming spa and rescue pet store in Bel Air, California called Fresh Paws of Bel Air. Linda and her family live in the Chatsworth area.

David Gutkind works for Fortanasce & Associates in Arcadia as a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Lori Stolp (Lori Busik in the year book) is a Los Angeles County Fire Department EMS Batallion Captain. Lori is married to John Stolp a Poly Alumni Class of 1983. She has worked for the Los Angeles County Fire Department since 1991. She began as a paramedic. She supervises the Paramendics and EMT's in a geographical area. Her area spans from the USC Campus to the San Pedro Harbor. She has been married for 20 years. They have two girls 18 years and 15 years old.

Sinne Andersen lives in the San Fernando Valley and works as Radiology Technician. She also rescue animals. She also volunteers with various nonprofit groups.

Scott Woods is a sales consultant for Wyndham. He spent 14 years in the Silicon Valley. He is married and has four boys. He has been with his wife since 1993. David Walton works for the Parks and Recreation Department in Las Vegas.

Bruce Nomoto, and Virgil Miriles work at JPL in Pasadena. Bruce Nomoto (CSUN), works in the Business Adminstration. Virgil Mireles (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo) works in the Engineering Department.

Poly Band member Mike O'Gara (UCLA) has worked as a LA Deputy DA for over 17 years, trying over 75 jury trials. He is currently a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge at the San Fernando courthouse. Prior to becoming a judge he was the sole prosecutor assigned to over 30 complex insurance fraud investigations and prosecutions involving over $35 million in losses.   He earned his Law degree from Southwestern University School of Law.  His wife Melissa Baker is a high school Spanish teacher in the Glendale Unified School District. They have two children, ages seven and four. Mike won the November 4, 2008 Election to become a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge. Mike got 1,199,429 votes and captured 63% of the votes. Margaret Garcia attended UCLA and earned her PhD at UC Berkeley in Educational Psychology. She is an Associate Professor at Cal State LA.  She also serves on the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and have participated in developing the new standards for training school psychologists in California.

Ronald K. Watanabe went to UCLA where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and then went to the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton where he received his doctorate in Optometry. He married Nadia Zalatio in 2001. His wife is Chief of Optometry service at the Veterans Adminstration Medical Centeral, Manchester, New Hampshire. Ron also works for the Casazza Optometric Group. Ron works in Boston Massachussets.

Poly Optimist Editor Patricia Motzko is a Web Manager for Oregon Health & Science University in Portland Oregon.

The Poly 200 Club required brute strentgh for membership. (You had to bench press 200 lbs to get in the club) 200 member Harold Sharpe has worked as a electrician for the past 20 years and a real estate broker for the past eight years.

Drill Team Captain Suzanne Hilgendorf attended Cal State Northridge and then lived in Germany for a few years, where she worked for the Wall Street Journal and AP Dow Jones News Service. She moved back to the States to earn her PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was an Assistant Professor of German at Wayne State University in Detroit for several years, and this past February she moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University. 
Ingrid Rushing (CSUN) is currently the President/CEO of a Family Home Agency called Community Options in Van Nuys. Community Options provides support services for developmentally disabled adults living in Southern and Central California. 

Yvonne Sanchez works at a vetirinarian hospital during the evenings and is employed at the Los Angeles Unified School District during the day. She has three children.

Both Mark Alson and Mike Roberts went onto Medical School and became Medical Doctors. Mark Alson went to UC Irvine and majored in Biological Sciences and graduated from UC San Diego Medical School. He is a successful radiologist in Fresno.

Mike Roberts went to UCLA and majored in Biology and graduated from Georgetown Medical School. He is a Board Certified Anesthesiologist who works and lives in Santa Monica, CA. Mike has been married for 12 years and have three sons.

Eloisa Andal works for the California Wellness Foundation. She is a senior program assistant. Beth Lepore reportedly received her bachelor degree in Dental Hygene from USC and works in Encino.

Poly Choir member Jack Stephens is married and has two daughters. He obtained his Masters Degree in counseling psychology from Pepperdine and did psychotherapy for a while. Approximately 10 years ago, he started a clinical trials company that is one of the largest schiozphrenia research centers on the west coast. 

Brian Friedman is general manager and part owner of New Century Volkswagen in Glendale. He is married and has one boy and one girl. Larry Motoyama received his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology with a minor in mathematics. He is a math teacher at Bonita Vista Middle School in Chula Vista. Elliot Mason owns and operates his own Window Treatment Business. He has two boys. Luis Torres is a LAPD Detective. He also plays in a band on the weekends. Laurie Javier is a pharmacist. Jaime Rodriguez graduated from USC with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Nina Jackson earned a degree from Cal State University Dominguez Hills and is a junior high school teacher. Darryl Martin works at ORCO Construction as a warehouse manager. He has three children Christopher 20, Donova 19, and Jonathan 12.

Johnny Satterfield graduated from USC with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and has his own business. Albert Johnson works for a Limousine Company. Lori Wada reportedly works as a school teacher. Tony Patton works for UPS.Poly basketball player

Robert Kunkle graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts Degreee in Georaphy/Environmetal Policy. He is a Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator for Amyway Corporation, a position he has held since 1996. Kunkle lives in Belding, Michigan.

Poly Basketball player David Walton lives in Nevada Las Vegas where he works for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Amy Goto is now Amy Iwashita and is married. She just moved to San Francisco from Northridge. She has two girls. Cindy Vellins is married with two kids.

Nancy Schmeltzer owns a construction company in the Bay Area. She is married and lives in Oakland..

Felicia Nelson works as an inspector for the Department of Health. Deanna Winchell (Nations) lives in Cape Coral Florida. Susan Kimura is a school teacher with the Manhattan Beach Unified School District where she teaches middle school students.

Brian Halstead and Patty Conroy are husband and wife. Brian served in the military for 12 years. Patty is a tennis coach. Lee Fuselier is a social worker.

Trisha Kitchen is married with two kids. Lori Garrison is a mother of five. She is a supervisor of the Radiology Dept. of a hospital where she works as a Radiology Technologist.

Darlene Kohler is married with two kids. Brett Parrick is married with three kids. Don Ross is married with three kids. Joyce DeCastro has four kids. Rebekah Tacket is married with four children. Janice Knight has been married for about 23 years and has one kid.

Lillian Benavides is a dental assistant. LaJuan Allen is a professional writer. She has been married since 1986 and have 4 sons. They moved to Kansas in 2007 where her husband and two oldest sons got jobs. She recently completed a book for children which will soon be published. She is now working on a second book.

Poly High Cheerleader Rosanna Petrilli is a school teacher. Phillip Yoshino is a manager in a major grocery chain store. John Nava is married with three kids. Ruth Rosales is a homemaker and very active with her church.

Kathleen Redmond is married with two kids. Bill Wigodsky is a retired police officer. He currently works as a consultant and is married with two kids. Mary Masciotra has two kids. Felicia Johns has one kid. Karen Wampler is married with two kids. Brenda Felt is married with one kid. Susana Santiago moved to Phoenix, Arizona after graduating from Poly. She is married and has three children.

Peangruta "Penny" Archussachat received her AA from Valley College and attended both CSUN and CSLA for her BA. She works for a trading company doing inventory control. She lives in Santa Clarita and has one six year old son. Marco Garcia worked with father installing custom tile in many movie stars homes. He lived in Sitka Alaska for 11 years. He earned BA in Behavioral Science. Married, 4 children, now living in Henderson NV, working in Las Vegas NV as the Associate Director & Program Manager for a Native Indian Center, and a small remodeling business owner.


Conidered among the best sports writers ever produced by Poly High School, Matt Piazza (Class of 1991) developed his sports writing skills while writing for Poly Optimist. The year after graduating from Poly, Matt worked for the Los Angeles Daily News as a sports correspondent. As many of you may recall, Matt was a jock himself, playing several years as a varsity starter for the Poly basketball team. Matt Piazza also pursued political office. He is currently a high school teacher at the Division of Juvenile Justice, a correctional facility for juveniles in Norwalk, California. He has two kids. His daughter is a popular model who recently made the cover of Maxim Magazine.

Movie Actor Danny Trejo often plays the role of bad guys. Trejo co-starred with Al Pacino in the movie Heat.

Ranked the number #1 best sports writer to ever graduate from Poly High, Eric Sondheimer (Class of 1976) is described as the Dean of Prep Sports Writers . Eric Sondheimer, is an award winning sports writer for the Los Angeles Times and got his start in journalism as Sports Editor of the Poly Optimist. He has interviewed some of the greatest High School Sports players before they became famous including former Granada Hills quarterback John Elway and Thousand Oaks athelete Marion Jones. After his days at Poly, Eric went on to work for the Los Angeles Daily News as the high school sports editor. From their he went on to work for the Los Angeles Times.

Eric's brother Michael Sondheimer (Class of 1973) was also a Poly Optimist Sports Editor and previously worked for more than 35 years as a UCLA athletic administrator. Michael previously worked with all 22 coaching staffs as the Associate Athletic Director--Academic Admissions Services. He is involved in all aspects of the academic and admissions process for prospective student-athletes.

One of John H. Francis Polytechnic High School's most recent well known celebrity is American Idol contestant William Hung (Class of 2001) who is best known for his performance of Ricky Martin's hit song "She Bangs." He never made it past the first round but Hung got the last laugh -- earning more than one million dollars in record sales. He also developed a huge fan base and is recognized every where he goes. Fans have even made marriage proposals to him. William is currently 24 years of age and recently transferred from UC Berkeley to CSUN.

Basketball Hall of Famer Gail Goodrich (Class of 1961) helped lead Poly High School to the 1961 City Championship when he played on a broken ankle against Manual Arts High School. Goodrich helped UCLA win its first two NCAA championships, in 1964 and 1965. He set three UCLA records including scoring most points in a season (744), most points in a single game (42 - Against Michigan in the NCAA Championship Game) and most points scored in a UCLA career (1691). Goodrich also led the Lakers in scoring during their championship season in 1971-72 when they won 33 consecutive games. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996. Poly High recently retired Goodrich's jersey in 2003 and it was fellow Poly alumnus Eric Sondheimer who reported on the special event. See Goodrich in action. As famous as he became, Goodrich was never was to busy to make return visits to his alma mater Poly High to attend numerous Varsity vs. Alumni games.

The most famous politician to come from Poly High is Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. Bradley lost his first bid for Mayor against Sam Yorty in 1969. However, this former Poly High graduate beat Yorty in a rematch in 1973. This former Poly High graduate was the longest serving mayor in the City of Los Angeles with 20 years of leadership. He was a LAPD officer for 20 years and a Los Angeles City Councilman for 10 years before beating incumbent Sam Yorty. The LAX International Airport has been named after this notable Poly graduate.
